Our transcription: Not all of the ice core analysis is done in the field.

Ultimately, the samples are carefully packed and transported to several research institutions.

One of the foremost centers for the study of ice cores is the State University of New York at Buffalo.

An important goal of this project is to determine the composition of gases trapped in the ice.

In general, the content of nitrogen and oxygen in bubbles shows little change relative to our modern atmosphere.

But the levels of such important greenhouse gases as methane and carbon dioxide rise significantly in bubbles trapped after the last ice age.

Scientists aren't sure whether the rise in greenhouse gases ended the ice age, or the end of the ice age simply allowed these gases to increase because of the greater biological activity.
