Bryant Named Deputy Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today announced that Wilbert Bryant will serve as deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Postsecondary Education.

As deputy assistant secretary, Bryant will be responsible for assisting with the general direction and supervision of all matters relating to postsecondary programs and services.

Prior to joining the Department of Education, Bryant served as Virginia's Secretary of Education during the administration of James S. Gilmore III. In this capacity, Bryant provided advice on the needs of 37 educational and cultural agencies, and managed the policy development and budget materials for K-12 public schools, vocational and technical training centers, 15 colleges and universities, the state community college system, 5 public museums, the Library of Virginia, and 2 teaching hospitals. From 1994 - 1998, he served as deputy secretary of education under the leadership of former Governor George Allen. In this position, Bryant assisted with numerous education initiatives including Virginia's Standards of Learning, which established rigorous academic standards for K-12 students in English, Mathematics, Science and History. Bryant, a Vietnam Veteran and highly decorated officer, retired from the United States Army in 1990 with the full rank of Colonel after serving nearly 28 years.

A native of Goulds, Florida, Bryant received his Bachelor of Science degree from Florida A & M University and a Master of Education from Howard University.
