Keywords: "Robert Tilling", volcano, "divergent plate", "oceanic hot spot", eruption, "lava flow", basalt, flow, "shield volcano"

Our transcription: Like volcanoes at divergent boundaries, oceanic hot spot volcanoes erupt predominantly very hot basaltic lava.

Flow after flow piles up, building vast, broad mountains known as "shield volcanoes".

In general, the volcanoes that are formed by very low viscosity magmas tend to be very broad convex, very broad shield-like volcanoes and are, in fact, called "shield" volcanoes.

The reason for that is when the lava is erupted because it is so fluid it can spread out over long distances on very low slopes, so as a consequence you get lava flows traveling for 10, 20, 30 kilometers.
