David Schindel

Executive Secretary

Dr. David Schindel is the Executive Secretary of the Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL). Dr. Schindel was trained as an invertebrate paleontologist and holds a B.S. in Geology from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from Harvard. He was a member of Yale University’s Department of Geology & Geophysics and was Curator of Invertebrate Fossils in the Yale Peabody Museum from 1978 to 1986.

In 1986, Dr. Schindel joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) where he directed a variety of funding programs that provided support for: research in systematic biology; improving facilities and constructing specimen databases in natural history museums and herbaria; improving elementary school science education; major research instrumentation; interdisciplinary research centers; and strategic evaluation. During 1997 Dr. Schindel worked in the U.S. Senate as a Brookings Institution LEGIS Fellow in the office of Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM).

From 1998 to 2004, Dr. Schindel served as the National Science Foundation’s European representative, based in the US Embassy in Paris.

Meg Fritzsche

Administrator

Ms. Fritzsche joined the Secretariat from within the Smithsonian. She spent one year at the Smithsonian’s Office of Sponsored Projects working in grant administration. Prior to the Smithsonian, Ms. Fritzsche spent three years teaching high school English in Japan. She graduated from DePauw University where she majored in Art History and minored in French and Asian Studies. She gained experience in international relations while living in France and Japan.

Agnes Balla

Project Specialist

Agnes manages all of CBOL's websites, case study submissions, and keeps track of all of our member organizations and publications. She assembles our outreach documents like this newsletter and helps in planning and conducting all CBOL meetings, including the international conference.  In the last few months, Agnes has also been preparing data and specimens for the Tephritid Barcoding Initiative.  Agnes received a BS in biology from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2006, after which she joined CBOL as an intern and then a regular staff member.

Mike Trizna

Data Management Support Specialist

Mike recently completed his Masters in bioinformatics from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been working full-time as data management specialist after interning with CBOL last summer. His main task will be to develop the BOLI Data Portal, in collaboration work with CBOL’s Data Analysis Working Group, Database Working Group, and Leading Labs Network. Mike will be the main point of contact for barcoding labs that need help with data management problems such as uploading their barcode data to BOLD and GenBank.

Kristin Jett

Program Assistant

Ms. Jett joined CBOL’s Secretariat Office after graduating from UCLA’s Ecology and Evolutionary Biology program with a B.Sc. degree and experience researching morphological trends in vertebrate paleobiology. She will be the main contact person for the Biorepositories Registry site that CBOL has created in partnership with GenBank and GBIF, and will be working closely with Meg and Agnes in providing critical support for all the logistics associated with CBOL meetings.  Ms. Jett will also be using her design talents and computer knowledge to develop and produce future CBOL outreach documents and user resources for the Leading Labs Network.
