PSD Co-Hosts 31st Annual Climate Diagnostics & Prediction Workshop
October 24, 2006
The NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory's Physical Sciences Division (PSD) is co-hosting with the NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC) the 31st Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop, October 23-27, 2006, in Boulder, CO. Martin Hoerling of PSD, is a co-organizer of this year's workshop where approximately 140 attendees will discuss new research results and forecasting efforts in a manner to improve understanding of U.S. climate predictability. A second focus is to discuss new research results on recent climate variations, extreme events, and trends over the U.S. in order to assess capabilities to explain evolving climate conditions that have high societal impacts and are of high decision making relevance. Background:
The Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop has been held every year since
1976, and provides an opportunity for climate researchers and their partners in
the government, academic, and private sectors to exchange ideas and information
in an informal setting. The Workshops were convened by the NOAA Climate Office
between 1976 and 1978. They have since been sponsored by CPC with different
co-hosts and locations each year.
Significance:
As an important forum for climate researchers to present the results of their
research, interact with other professionals, and promote scientific
collaboration, this workshop supports NOAA's goal to improve understanding of
climate variability and change to enhance society's ability to plan and respond.
