National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS)

Policy & Research Issues

NPSAS covers a number of topics of interest to policymakers, educators, and researchers. For example, NPSAS collects data that can be used to analyze the participation of students in financial aid programs. The goal is to identify institutional, student, and family characteristics and others related to program participation. Special population enrollment in postsecondary education is also analyzed. These populations include students with disabilities, racial and ethnic minorities, students taking remedial/developmental courses, students from families with low incomes, and older students. Another component of NPSAS is the study of the distribution of students by major field of study. Major fields of particular interest include mathematics, science, engineering, as well as teacher preparation and health studies. NPSAS generates data on factors associated with choice of postsecondary institution, participation in postsecondary vocational education, parental support for postsecondary education, and occupational and educational aspirations.
