Summary: Correspondence, clippings, book, article, lectures, and other papers of Pennell and his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, relating to family affairs and to James McNeill Whistler. Includes 129 letters from Pennell to Leila Mechlin and about 200 letters from Charles Godfrey Leland to his niece, Mrs. Pennell. The Leland papers include family correspondence, journals (1892-1899), drafts of his writings, legends and letters of Indians, and memoranda, relating to religion, travels, and New England Indians. The Pennells' correspondents include Elmer Adler, J. M. Barrie, Paul Wayland Bartlett, Timothy Cole, Royal Cortissoz, Walter Crane, Charles Deschamps, Theodore Duret, Henri Fantin-Latour, Ford Madox Ford, Cass Gilbert, Edmund William Gosse, Charles Hanson, Childe Hassam, Henry James, Robert Underwood Johnson, John Lane, A. Edward Newton, Agnes Repplier, Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice, Auguste Rodin, William Edwin Rudge, Linley Sambourne, John Singer Sargent, and John Charles Van Dyke.
Correspondence, legal papers, and clippings of Whistler relate to the Whistler exhibition (1892) in The Goupil Gallery, London; the Whistler-Ruskin litigation; and Whistler's friends, career, and business affairs. Includes almanac and diary of Anna Matilda McNeill Whistler, and her letters to Margaret Hill, Mary Eastwick, and others. Whistler's correspondents include Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Thomas Jekyll, Edward G. Kennedy, Frederick Richard Leyland, Joseph Pennell, Valentine Cameron Princep, James Anderson Rose, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Frederick Sandys, David Croal Thompson, Virginia Vaughan, William Heinemann, dealers, and the Morris Company.
