An extraordinary man wins an extraordinary prize: Leszek Kolakowski was awarded
the first John W. Kluge Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Human Sciences
at the Library of Congress, a $1 million prize designed to honor lifetime achievement
in the humanities and social sciences—areas of scholarship for which there
are no Nobel Prizes; the Librarian of Congress offers a profile of Kolakowski's
life and work; and, the winner gives his remarks at the Library upon acceptance
of the award.
