The estimate for the United States is drawn from a nationally representative sample of schools and is not the aggregate of participating states. Each state estimate is based on a sample that is representative of that state. Population sizes from the Digest of Education Statistics, 2005 (NCES 2006-030) for students in grades 9–12 are 15,723,000 in 2003 and 16,286,000 (projected) in 2005.
