Sergeant Major Christopher Harper

Sergeant Major Christopher D. Harper was born in Cordele, Georgia on January 3, 1963. He graduated from Crisp County High School in 1981 and began his Marine Corps career by enlisting in the Marine Corps in December 1982. He was promoted  to his present grade in May 2004.

After attending recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina and Infantry training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he was assigned to Marine Barracks Rota, Spain April 1983 for guard duty. September 1984 he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal.

In 1985 he was assigned to 2nd Battalion 6th Marines Camp Lejeune, N.C. where he served as a Squad leader and Platoon Sergeant. While assigned to 6th Marines he deployed with the 22nd MEU (SOC) and a UDP to Okinawa Japan.

In 1987 his unit was redesigned to 2nd Battalion 8th Marines.

February 1988 he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

In 1988 he was assigned to 2nd Battalion 2nd Marines Camp Lejeune, N.C.

In March 1989 he reported for duty as a Drill Instructor. After successful completion of Drill Instructor School he was assigned to B Company 1st Recruit Training Battalion, PISC where he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.

While on the Drill Field he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in July 1991.

In July 1991 he was assigned to Weapons Training Battalion MCCDC Quantico, Va. Where he served as a Marksmanship Instructor, Range Officer, and Sergeant Instructor at OCS.

In April 1994 he was assigned to 1st Battalion 8th Marines Camp Lejeune N.C. where he served as a Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant, and Weapons Platoon Commander. In January 1996 Sergeant Major Harper was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. While assigned to 8th Marines he deployed with the 26th MEU (SOC) and a UDP to Okinawa Japan. While deployed with the 26th MEU he participated in Operation Silver Wake in Tirana, Albania.

In December 1997 he was assigned to Bravo Company 1st Recruit Training Battalion Parris Island S.C. where he served as a Senior Drill Instructor, Series Gunnery Sergeant, and Company First Sergeant. In December 1999 he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant.

In June 2001 he was assigned to 1st Battalion 10th Marines Camp Lejeune N.C. where he served as the Battery First Sergeant for Battery A and Headquarters Battery. While assigned to 10th Marines he deployed January 2003 to Iraq as part of Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd MEB Task Force Tarawa.

In January 2004 he was assigned to 2D Intelligence Battalion, II MEF as the Battalion Sergeant Major. While assigned to 2D Intelligent Battalion he deployed to Iraq for a second tour as part of I MEF.

In July 2005 he was assigned to I-I Marietta, Ga. HQSVCBN, 4th MLG where he served as the Inspector Instructor Sergeants Major.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal 2nd award, Navy Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
