A Guide To Portrayals of American Military on Film To Be Discussed on July 25
Lawrence H. Suid and Dolores A. Haverstick will discuss their new book, "Stars and Stripes on Screen: A Comprehensive Guide to Portrayals of American Military on Film," at noon on Monday, July 25, in Dining Room A on the sixth floor of the Library’s Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.
A book signing will follow the discussion. The program, part of the Center for the Book’s "Books & Beyond" author series, is free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations are needed. The Library’s Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division (MBRS), whose collections were used extensively by the authors in their research, is cosponsoring the event.
"Stars and Stripes on Screen" (Scarecrow Press, 2005) is a comprehensive reference guide to the roles played by U.S. armed services in motion pictures from 1898 to the present. It contains entries for more than 1,000 feature films produced in the United States and abroad, and information about more than 100 made-for-television films and more than 175 documentaries.
The guide offers a major entry for each feature film, including details on the war or period of time portrayed in the story, the military service or services depicted, cooperation (if any) from the American military in the production of the film and, if applicable, the dates each film was reviewed in Weekly Variety and/or The New York Times. The guide also features a chronology of films by service (Air Force, Army, Navy). In addition, there are 10 appendices, which include selective lists of actors and directors who have significant military film credits, lists of the "25 Greatest Military Films" and the "25 Worst Military Films," and a list of all military films that have received Academy Awards, regardless of category.
Suid is a military historian who specializes in the relationship between the film industry and the U.S. armed services. His principal books are "Sailing on the Silver Screen: Hollywood and the U.S. Navy" (Naval Institute Press, 1996) and "Guts & Glory: Great American War Movies" (Addison-Wesley, 1978; revised and expanded edition, University of Kentucky Press, 2002). He also has written histories of the Army’s nuclear power program (1990) and the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (1992). Haverstick is the former director of human resources in the office of the inspector general in the U.S. Department of Labor. She has edited Suid’s books for the past 15 years.
MBRS was created in 1978 to provide preservation of and access to the Library’s unparalleled audio-visual works. The division’s collections include 1.1 million film and video items.
The Center for the Book, established in 1977 as a public-private partnership, uses the resources of the Library of Congress to stimulate public interest in books, reading and libraries.
