New Book on Genealogy of Greek Mythology to be Featured at Books & Beyond Talk on Dec. 11
Vanessa James will discuss her new groundbreaking reference guide, "The Genealogy of Greek Mythology" (Gotham Books, 2003), at the Library of Congress at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, in the Pickford Theater, third floor, Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., in Washington, D.C.
James’ presentation is part of the Center for the Book’s "Books & Beyond" author series, which highlights new books of particular relevance to the collections or programs of the Library of Congress. It is co-sponsored with the Publishing Office.
Eighteen years in the making, the volume is a comprehensive family tree of the Greek gods and their mortal descendants, assembled into a unique, full-color, fully illustrated, 17-foot-long, fold-out volume. In her acknowledgments, the author cites the help she received from the Library of Congress, in particular Blaine Marshall and Vincent Virga of the Library’s Publishing Office.
Vanessa James is an associate professor at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, where she teaches courses in ancient Greek and Roman theater practice and design. She has served as an art director for film, television and stage productions, as well as shows at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Parma Opera House in Italy.
The Center for the Book, established in 1977 as a public-private partnership, uses the resources and prestige of the Library of Congress to stimulate public interest in books, reading, literacy and libraries.
