New Jersey Center for the Book Approved
The Library of Congress has approved a proposal to create a New Jersey Center for the Book that will be affiliated with the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. The New Jersey Center for the Book will be hosted by the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick, N.J. It becomes the 44th state affiliate in a network that also includes the District of Columbia.
Renee B. Swartz, a New Jersey library advocate and trustee who has wide experience throughout the state, will be the coordinator. Gustav W. Friedrich, Dean of the Rutgers School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies, is on the center's advisory board. "There has been a groundswell of support for the new center," said Ms. Swartz. "Our home at Rutgers will help us take advantage of that institution's wonderful resources in New Brunswick and across the state. We look forward to becoming part of this important national endeavor."
"I'm delighted that New Jersey once again has a center for the book," said Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole. "This new center has a much broader partnership base than the first New Jersey state center, which existed from 1990 to 1993." The advisory board for the New Jersey Center for the Book includes representatives from the New Jersey State Library, the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame, the New Jersey Historical Association, and several other organizations and individual public libraries.
The New Jersey Center for the Book's mission is "to celebrate books, reading, libraries, and the diverse literary heritage of New Jersey." The center's first projects will include the creation of a Web site and the development of a literary map of New Jersey.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and libraries.
