Wizard of Oz Book To Be Featured at "Books & Beyond" Presentation on Tuesday, May 30

Jay Scarfone and William Stillman, the authors of The Wizardry of Oz: The Artistry and Magic of the 1939 M-G-M Classic (Gramercy Books, 1999), will discuss their book at the Library of Congress on Tuesday, May 30, in the Mumford Room, sixth floor, James Madison Memorial Building, at 6 p.m.

Illustrated with slides and a specially prepared video, the presentation is sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress as part of its "Books & Beyond" author series.

Mr. Scarfone and Mr. Stillman are nationally recognized as authorities on The Wizard of Oz, and are among the lenders to the Library's Bicentennial exhibition "The Wizard of Oz: An American Fairy Tale," which opened on April 21 and can be seen in the South Gallery of the Great Hall of the Jefferson Building through September 21.

"Jay and Bill helped us with the exhibition in many ways," said curator Frank Evina of the Library's Copyright Office. "Exhibit director Martha Hopkins and I appreciated their advice and the loan of two items from their collection: a Spanish poster promoting the 1939 Wizard of Oz motion picture and the Emerald City townsman's coat."

Jay Scarfone and William Stillman are coauthors of The Wizard of Oz: The Official 50th Anniversary Pictorial History and the definitive reference work, The Wizard of Oz Collector's Treasury.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and libraries. For information about future events and projects and the activities of the center's affiliated state centers and national reading promotion partners, call the center at (202) 707-5221 or consult its Web site at www.loc.gov/loc/cfbook.
