John Cole to Present Elizabeth W. Stone Lecture at Catholic University on March 30

John Y. Cole, founding director of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and a 33-year Library of Congress veteran, will present the 11th annual Elizabeth W. Stone Lecture at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, in the Life Cycle Building Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In "Libraries, Creativity, Liberty: The Library of Congress and Its Bicentennial," Dr. Cole will discuss the Library's Bicentennial commemoration in 2000 in the context of the institution's history and future. A historian of the Library of Congress, Dr. Cole also is co-chair of its Bicentennial Steering Committee.

Hosted each year by Catholic University's School of Library and Information Science, the Stone Lecture is presented in honor of Elizabeth W. Stone, the School's Dean Emeritus. The event benefits the Elizabeth Stone Loan Fund, which helps support students in the School of Library and Information Science. For information, contact the school by telephone (202) 319-5085 or by fax (202) 319-5574.

John Y. Cole has published widely about books and libraries in society as well as about the history of the Library of Congress. He is the author of two best-selling books in the Library of Congress Sales Shop: Jefferson's Legacy: A Brief History of the Library of Congress (1993, reprinted 1998) and On These Walls: Inscriptions and Quotations in the Buildings of the Library of Congress (1995, reprinted 1999). In 1996 the District of Columbia Library Association presented him with its President's Award for his "outstanding contributions to the entire library community."
