Essayist Anne Fadiman to Speak at Library of Congress Oct. 20

Anne Fadiman, who until earlier this year wrote the popular "Common Reader" column for the Library's magazine Civilization, will present a talk at the Library on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. in the Mumford Room, sixth floor Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. Part of the Center for the Book's "Books & Beyond" author series, the program is free and open to the public. Ms. Fadiman is now the editor of The American Scholar.

Ms. Fadiman's new book, Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1998), is a compilation of her columns from Civilization. Ms. Fadiman's first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down (1997), won the National Book Critics Circle Award for nonfiction.

A graduate of Harvard University in 1975, Ms. Fadiman began her writing career at Harvard magazine. She was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University in 1991-92, and has written for Harper's, Life, Esquire, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.
