Addendum: Vol. 41, No. RR-3

In the MMWR Recommendations and Reports, "A Framework for Assessing the Effectiveness of Disease and Injury Prevention," dated March 27, 1992, the last paragraph on page 7 gives a formula for prevented fraction. In the formula, P1 is the proportion of the cases that accepts the intervention, PF is the prevented fraction, and RR is the relative risk. The formula for a population-based study is PF=P(1-RR), where P is the proportion of the entire population that accepts the intervention.
