QuickStats: Percentage of Persons Aged 18--49 Years with HIV*

During 1999--2002, the seroprevalence of HIV was 0.37% among persons aged 18--39 years and 0.54% among
persons aged 40--49 years. Among persons aged 18--49 years, the highest percentage of HIV infection (3.58%) was among
non-Hispanic blacks aged 40--49 years. These prevalences likely are underestimates of HIV infection because the survey sample
is the U.S. household population and excluded homeless persons and those in institutions, who might be at higher risk
for infection.
