Weekly Update: West Nile Virus Activity --- United States, July 3--9, 2002
This report summarizes West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance data reported to CDC through ArboNET and verified
by states and other jurisdictions as of July 9, 2002.
During the reporting week of July 3--9, the first verified human case of WNV encephalitis in 2002 was reported
from Louisiana in a man aged 78 years. During the same period, WNV infections
were reported in 31 dead crows, 75 other dead
birds, seven sentinel chicken flocks, four horses, one
wild bird that was caught and released, and one mosquito pool.
During 2002, in addition to the one human case of WNV encephalitis, a total of 116 dead crows and 151 other dead
birds with WNV infection were reported from 18 states and the District of Columbia (Figure); 14 WNV infections in horses
were reported from three states (Florida, Kentucky, and Louisiana). During 2002, WNV seroconversions were reported in
10 sentinel chicken flocks from Florida; WNV seropositivity was reported from two states (Indiana and Louisiana) in two
wild birds that were caught and released; and seven WNV-positive mosquito pools were reported from three states (Illinois,
New Jersey, and Ohio).
