Women's Legal Rights Advocate To Deliver Women's History Month Keynote Address
Marcia Greenberger, founder and co-president of the National Women's Law Center in Washington, D.C., will deliver the 2003 Women's History Month keynote address at the Library of Congress at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, March 18, in the Mumford Room, sixth floor, James Madison Memorial Building, Washington, D.C. The lecture is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
A recognized expert on sex discrimination and the law, Greenberger has participated in the development of key legislative initiatives and litigation protecting women's rights, particularly in the areas of education, employment and health. She has served as counsel in landmark litigation establishing new legal precedents for women. She has also fought for the implementation and enforcement of Title IX -- the law passed in 1972 to prohibit sex discrimination at educational institutions that receive federal funds. The law gave millions of young women a greater opportunity to play organized sports.
Greenberger received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She practiced law with the Washington, D.C., firm of Caplin and Drysdale for several years until she founded the Women's Rights Project of the Center for Law and Social Policy in 1972. The Project became the National Women's Law Center in 1981.
For her work to protect and advance the progress of women in virtually every aspect of their lives, Greenberger has received numerous awards and professional honors including the Woman Lawyer of the Year Award by the D.C. Women's Bar Association, and the William J. Brennan, Jr. award by the District of Columbia Bar.
