The departure of men at the outbreak of Civil War changed the lives
of women, burdening them with unaccustomed responsibilities. A remarkable
record of the Civil War exists through the personal testimonies
of a variety of women. Seen here is an entry from Betty Herndon
Maury's diary, which recounts the difficult experience of relocation
that many Confederate women and families faced at the eruption of
war.
