Horace Greeley, seated at center, the eccentric publisher of the
New York Tribune, personified the ebullient spirit of 1850s American
politics. A founding member of the Republican party, passionate
in his belief that all Americans should be politically and economically
free, he spoke out against monopolies and in support of labor unions
and experiments in "constructive democracy."
