STRONG PARTICIPANTS AND EARLY DROP OUT RATES

This bar graph shows the percentage of pregnant women who enrolled during pregnancy were more likely to be strong participants in Early Head Start than those who enrolled after their child was born (56% vs. 49%). Women who enrolled in Early Head Start during pregnancy were also less likely to drop out early than those who enrolled after their child was born (20% vs. 26%). This is based on duration of time in the program and number of home visits per month and/or hours of center-based child care. (back to graph 1)

CIGARETTE AND ALCOHOL USE

This clustered column graph demonstrates how substantial and strong Head Start participants were less likely to have smoked cigarettes during pregnancy prior to enrollment (19% for both substantial and strong participants vs. 34% of weak participants and 43% of early dropouts). Weak Early Head Start participants were more likely to have used alcohol during pregnancy prior to enrollment (22% vs. 11% of early dropouts, 13% of substantial participants, and 7% of strong participants).
