Current Issues Briefing

Nigeria's Federal Democracy
Will it Survive?

With democratic elections scheduled for August 2002 and April 2003, a panel of experts addressed current events in Nigeria and their bearing on the country's nascent democracy. Exploring themes discussed in the recent Institute Press book Federalism and Ethnic Conflict in Nigeria, written by former Institute Senior Fellow Rotimi Suberu, the panel explored issues including:

  • The effect of corruption on the functioning of federal, state and local governments in Nigeria;

  • Intra-state religious and ethnic conflicts and prospects for their management and resolution;

  • The rise of Sharia or Islamic law in northern Nigeria; and

  • What the United States can or should do to help keep democracy afloat there.

Moderated by noted Africa scholar and Institute Senior Fellow Dr. Richard Joseph, the panel presentation was followed by discussion and questions from the audience.
