NPR’s Tom Gjelten To Discuss His New Book on Bacardi Family of Cuba
"Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba" Subject of Nov. 7 Program
National Public Radio’s Tom Gjelten will discuss his new book, "Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba," during a Books and Beyond program on Friday, Nov. 7, at noon in the West Dining Room, sixth floor of the Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. The program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the Humanities and Social Sciences Division and the Hispanic Division.
"Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba" is the dramatic story of one family, its business and its nation, paralleling Cuba’s own development. The Bacardis of Cuba, builders of a rum distillery and a worldwide brand, came of age with the nation and helped define what it meant to be Cuban. Across five generations, Bacardi family members have held fast to their Cuban identity, even in exile from the country for whose freedom they once fought. The family’s story is a microcosm of Cuban history, originating when the island was struggling for its freedom from Spain and continuing through the rise of Fidel Castro a century later.
Tom Gjelten is a veteran correspondent for NPR on international issues and a regular panelist on the Public Broadcasting System program "Washington Week." His reporting from the former Yugoslavia won him the George Polk and Robert F. Kennedy awards, as well as an Overseas Press Club award. He is also the author of "Sarajevo Daily: A City and Its Newspaper Under Siege."
The Center for the Book was established by Congress in 1977 "to use the resources and prestige of the Library of Congress to promote books, reading, literacy and libraries." With its many educational programs that reach readers of all ages, through its support of the National Book Festival and through its dynamic state centers in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, the Center for the Book has developed a nationwide network of organizational partners dedicated to promoting the wonders and benefits of reading. The center’s Books and Beyond author series brings writers of all genres to the Library of Congress to discuss their work.
