Captain Matthew McKenna

Director, Office on Smoking and Health, NCCDPHP

 

Captain Matthew T. McKenna, MD, MPH, is the director of the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), and a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service. As director, he supervises more than 100 scientists and administrative personnel who are responsible for leading federal activities in tobacco control. OSH is dedicated to reducing death and disease caused by tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Dr. McKenna joined CDC in 1989 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. From 2001 and prior to joining OSH, he served as a Deputy Director, Branch Chief and Section Chief within the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. Dr. McKenna has also held progressively more responsible positions at CDC in the areas of cancer, and tuberculosis, and HIV surveillance. Prior to his career at CDC, Dr. McKenna was a private practice family physician.

Dr. McKenna received his MD from Emory University and his MPH from the University of Pittsburgh. He is board certified in family and general preventive medicine and public health, and is also a fellow in the American College of Preventive Medicine.

He has authored and co-authored numerous publications on a wide array of topics including peripheral vascular disease, drug resistant tuberculosis, cervical cancer screening and health metrics such as the disability-adjusted life year.
