María Sofía Lioce-Mata

Assistant Coordinator, Global Collaborations Program, NIOSH

 

María Lioce-Mata, MD, MPH is Assistant Coordinator for the Global Collaborations Program at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and also works with the Regional Advisor on Workers′ Health at the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization. Her CDC responsibilities include collaborating on projects involving Hispanic workers. She is involved in international health projects through her participation in cooperative projects with partners in several Latin American countries. She is also involved in partnerships and projects with the US-Mexico Border Health Commission.

She came to NIOSH in 2004 from her home country of Venezuela to work as an occupational physician. She is an occupational and environmental health physician, with sixteen years of practice. She worked as a professor for seven years at the Central University of Venezuela.

Dr. Lioce-Mata provided technical assistance to NIOSH researchers in workplace settings where workers speak only Spanish. She partnered with the Institute of Public Health in Chile, to conduct training and build local capacity in spirometry. She also assisted PAHO in developing a manual for health care workers. Most recently, she provided leadership with country organizations, PAHO and WHO in the implementation of a pilot effort in Aragua State, Venezuela to build capacity to protect healthcare workers against occupational transmission of bloodborne pathogens. The successful pilot has been expanded already to Peru, with additional activities planned for Colombia and other countries of the region.
