Acting Team Leader, Program Services Branch, Division of Oral Health, NCCDPHP

 

Captain William Bailey, DDS, MPH, joined CDC in 2004 as a dental officer, where he is an expert on the health effects of fluoride. He currently serves as the Acting Team Leader for the Program Services Team, in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), supervising a team of eight public health professionals and providing oversight to the National Fluoridation Program and the State-Based Oral Disease Prevention Cooperative Agreement Program. This program will provide more than $22 million over the next five years to 16 states to strengthen their oral health programs and improve the oral health of their residents.

Captain Bailey graduated from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1982 and joined the U.S. Public Health Service the same year. He began his career as a dental officer for Denver Hospitals and Clinics. In 1985, he became the Chief Dental Officer for the Federal Correctional Institute in Ray Brook, NY, and in 1998, took an assignment in Guam as the coordinator for a school sealant program that provided care to 18,000 children annually. From 1991 to 1994, he worked in the Aberdeen Area Office of the Indian Health Service as the Area Dental Officer and Director of the Medical Care Evaluation Program.

In 1992, he received his Masters in Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and in 2003, he completed a dental public health residency with the Indian Health Service. Dr. Bailey is a diplomat of the American Board of Dental Public Health and is currently serving on the Executive Council of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry.
