Preparation and Credentialing: Lessons From Other Occupations for the Early Care and Education Field

Summary: This working paper considers options for the future of preparation and credentialing in the early care and education field. The professional development systems are examined of eight diverse occupations in the United States: (1) architects, (2) electrical engineers, (3) social workers, (4) registered nurses, (5) licensed practical nurses, (6) travel agents, (7) cosmetologists, and (8) electricians. The professional organizations, entry standards, credentialing practices, and preparation system are identified for each of these occupations. The implications of this information for the early care and education field are discussed. Contains 20 references.
