Developing Leadership: D.C.'s Professional Development System: How the District of Columbia is Building a Professional Development System from CDA Through Apprenticeship to Master's (Power Point)
By Barbara Ferguson Kamara, Maurice R Sykes, Diane Zurer
2004

Summary: This Microsoft PowerPoint presentation describes the professional development system in the District of Columbia. Data tables illustrate the 2004 center workforce, provider’s education level, and average salaries. Recommendations for the Office of Early Childhood Development include: (1) promote and expand opportunities for training for family child care providers in the city through the use of distance learning technologies and enhanced outreach programs, (2) establish a minimum number of clock hours of training for providers, (3) expand public education programs, and (4) promote national accreditation for both family child care providers and child care centers through the development of a video on the benefits of accreditation and scholarship opportunities available. The District of Columbia has responded to these recommendations with scholarships, accreditation support, the Early Childhood Leadership Institute, early learning standards for children entering kindergarten, and a tiered rate reimbursement system established in 2000.
