The Library of Congress Manuscript Division presented a symposium titled "Whitman and Place," held in conjunction with the Library's exhibition "Revising Himself: Walt Whitman and Leaves of Grass." Topics of discussion were "Walt Whitman in New York," "Whitman and the Civil War" and "Whitman in Camden-Philadelphia." Joann P. Krieg, English professor at Hofstra University; Ted Genoways, editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review at the University of Virginia; and William Pannapacker, assistant professor and Towsley Research Scholar in the English department at Hope College, made the presentations.
Speaker Biography: Joann Krieg is professor of English at Hofstra University. She is author of "A Whitman Chronology" (Iowa) and editor of "Walt Whitman, Here and Now."
Speaker Biography: Ted Genoways, the editor of Virgina Quarterly Review, is author of "Bullroarer" (Northeastern, 2001), winner of the Samuel French Morse Poetry Prize, the Natalie Ornish Poetry Award and the Nebraska Book Award. His other awards include a Pushcart Prize, a 2003 NEA Fellowship in Poetry and two Guy Owen Poetry Prizes from Southern Poetry Review. He is the editor of numerous books, including "The Selected Poems of Miguel Hernandez" (Chicago, 2001) and "The Collected Writings of Walt Whitman: The Correspondence, Volume VII" (Iowa, 2004).
Speaker Biography: William Pannapacker is assistant professor of English and Towsley Research Scholar at Hope College in Holland, Mich. He is a 1999 graduate of the program in the History of American Civilization at Harvard University. He is the author of "Revised Lives: Walt Whitman and Nineteenth-Century Authorship."
