What's New in Aerosols
What's New
NOAA Airborne Aerosol Observatory (AAO) to commence operations based near Bondville, IL. Proposed layout of this airplane includes measurements of aerosol optical properties, hygroscopic growth, aerosol composition, particle number, size distribution, and carbon cycle gases. |
Upgrade to larger aircraft (Cessna 206) for In-Situ Aerosol Profiling (IAP) program in Oklahoma. The larger aircraft will extend the horizontal and vertical range of the IAP flights and will accomodate additional measurements of carbon cycle gases, enhanced aerosol hygroscopic growth measurements, and future expansion (e.g., CCN measurements). |
CMDL aerosol system deployed to Cape Point Observatory in South Africa. Cape Point is a station operated by the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). |
CMDL aerosol system deployed to Mt Waliguan Observatory in China. Mt. Waliguan is a station operated by the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). |
The ARM Mobile facility with CMDLs modular aerosol system has been deployed to Point Reyes, CA as part of MASRAD a six month study to investigate the properties of marine stratus, including their interaction with aerosol particles. |
ARM Mobile facility is being outfitted in Boulder, CO with CMDLs modular aerosol system as part of MASRAD a six month study to investigate the properties of marine stratus, including their interaction with aerosol particles. |
ARM Aerosol Working Group hosted in Boulder by John Ogren of NOAA/CMDLs Aerosol Group and Joe Michalsky of NOAA/ARL |
Mobile aerosol system deployment in Puerto Rico as part of RICO and for a longer term (~1 year) study of aerosol optical properties in cooperation with the University of Puerto Rico. |
Mobile aerosol system deployment in Nova Scotia as part of ICARTT |
SMO CN counter upgrade Deployment of aerosol system at Alert Counter-flow Virtual Impactor (CVI) reference and photo repository |
Cloud-aerosol interaction field project at Areskutan, Sweden |

TRINIDAD HEAD site - Aerosol monitoring package deployed at Trinidad Head, CA
in anticipation of CMDL's establishment of a west coast observatory to monitor
long term trends in aerosol entering the United States. The aerosol system was
previously deployed at Cheju Island, South Korea from March 2001 - February 2002.
For the first month of
its deployment, the aerosol system will also be providing necessary aerosol
measurements to the NOAA/Aeronomy Lab's short term field intensive: the
Intercontinental
Transport and Chemical Transformation (ITCT) program. The
field intensive will run between April and May, 2002.
ACE-ASIA Aerosol monitoring package deployed at Kosan on Cheju Island,
South Korea, for the Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia). The
field intensive will run between March and May, 2001. |
Light absorption instrument
intercomparison and humidity effects Pat Sheridan (CMDL) and Pat Arnott
(DRI) do preliminary comparisons of instruments for measuring light absorption.
Smoke
from Los Alamos fires detected at SGP Both airborne and surface aerosol
monitors detect increased aerosol due to smoke from Los Alamos Cerro Grande
fire. |
In-situ Aerosol Profiles over the CART site in Oklahoma. The measurements
are being made by flying a light aircraft over the site and utilizing an
instrument package similar to the those at other CMDL stations (e.g., nephelometer
and PSAP). |
Mauna Loa Aerosol System Upgrade A new system was put in place at Mauna
Loa Observatory in Hawaii. New system improvements include drying of the
aerosol prior to sampling, two size cuts (1 and 10 um), and measurement
of back-scatter at 3 wavelengths. |
NOAA/CMDL data from the
Sable Island (WSA), Barrow (NSA), and South Great Plains (SGP) monitoring
stations have been reprocessed to correct for various instrument limitations
(e.g., nephelometer truncation and PSAP spot size) and corrected to STP.
NOAA/CMDL data
from Bondville Illinios (BND) have been reprocessed to correct for various
instrument limitations (e.g., nephelometer truncation and PSAP spot size)
and corrected to STP. |
NOAA/CMDL data
from Kaashidhoo Climate Observatory (KCO) during INDOEX. These data
are clean and corrected for various instrument limitations (e.g.,
nephelometer truncation and PSAP spot size) and corrected to STP.
