The Friday, July 26, 2002, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contains a study titled “Cigarette Smoking Among Adults—United States, 2000.” According to the study, approximately 23.3% of adults were current smokers in 2000; this was a decline from 25% in 1993. Preliminary data for 2001 indicate a continuing decline in current smoking among adults to 22.8%.
