Indexing principles for Category G - Biological Sciences

The MeSH terms in Category G can be divided into three general groups:

• G1 & G2 - specialties in biological and medical sciences
• G3 - the environment and public health
• G4 - G14 - biological processes and phenomena

Each of these groups and their applicable subheadings will be discussed separately.

IM vs NIM
Category G terms tend to be IM. However, some terms tend to be NIM coordinates for IM terms in other categories. For example, DIGESTION would likely be IM but OXIDATION-REDUCTION would be NIM, except in very general articles on oxidation-reduction per se. Check the MeSH annotations of each term for guidance.
