Indexing principles for Category I - Education and Social Sciences

Category I contains MeSH terms in the area of sociology and includes terms for:

  • the social sciences
  • education
  • human activities

Some of the terms in this category exist also as a subheading. Following established indexing policy, the subheading qualifying a specific MeSH heading will be used in most cases, while the corresponding Category I MeSH heading will be reserved for general articles.

For example, “economics” can be used both as a subheading and as a MeSH term. Articles that discuss economic aspects of a particular subject will be indexed with the subheading /economics. If an article discusses economics as a general subject, the MeSH heading ECONOMICS will be used.
