Indexing principles for Category L - Information Science

Category L contains the MeSH terms in the area of information science. This includes terms for:

  • communication
  • computers
  • library science
  • information handling
  • publications
  • publishing

Category L terms tend to be indexed as IM concepts.

Several Category L MeSH headings have corresponding Publication Type terms. For example, an article about the art of writing letters will be indexed with the MeSH term LETTERS AS TOPIC (Entry Term for CORRESPONDENCE AS TOPIC). However, a letter to the Editor commenting on a previously published article, will be indexed with the Publication Type LETTER. The general indexing policy is to reserve the MeSH term for articles about this term as a concept. The corresponding Publication Type is used to indicate the type of the article.
