Hope & Healing: A Caregiver's Guide to Helping Young Children Affected by Trauma
By Kathleen Fitzgerald Rice, Betsy McAlister Groves
2005

Summary: This information and resource guide is designed for early childhood professionals who care for children in a variety of early care and education settings. It was developed by the Child Witness to Violence Project at Boston Medical Center in collaboration with the Early Trauma Treatment Network. It was written in response to questions about children and trauma. The guide defines trauma and describes the effects of trauma on young children (aged birth to five years). Intervention strategies are suggested that early care and education professionals can use to help children and support families. Local and national resources for families and childhood professionals are identified. Guidance is offered to professionals on managing the stress of working with traumatized children. The relationships that children build and the care they receive in good-quality early childhood programs can give them the strength that they need to cope with traumatic experiences.
