Research Highlight: Texas Women's Knowledge and Use of Folic Acid
From the Texas Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention

Every 4 years, Texas scientists do the Texas Women's Health Survey. This is a short phone survey of health knowledge, thoughts, and behaviors. The questions are about birth defects prevention.
  • In 1997, researchers surveyed 1,200 Texas women. In 2001, they asked another 1,200 women the same questions.
  • Some of the questions they asked were about folic acid. They asked women what they know about folic acid. They also asked how often the women took vitamins with folic acid or ate cereals with folic acid.
  • Researchers compared results from both years. Awareness of folic acid rose from 66% to 78% among women surveyed. But, only 33% of women in each survey said they took a vitamin with folic acid every day.
  • The gap between awareness and use of folic acid is cause for concern. It shows that more work is needed to prevent birth defects. Repeating the survey every few years lets researchers track changes in these trends.
