A Stitch in Time: What Works with Troubled Preschoolers (PDF)
By Fight Crime: Invest in Kids
2003
Summary: This brief suggests that investments in early intervention for children with high levels of aggressive behavior can significantly reduce their disruptive behaviors, taking them off the path to delinquency and crime. Quality preschool programs decrease the likelihood that children will later become criminals (e.g., the High/Scope Perry Preschool project, the Chicago Child-Parent Center). The Incredible Years Program and the Early Childhood Initiative have been shown to benefit children with behavior problems. Investing in these “stitch-in-time” programs will ensure public safety in the future by preventing more children from growing up to become aggressive, violent adults.
