FY 1998 Award: $250,000

The New Mexico State Department completed its grant in September 2000. The project was designed to implement and expand character education in the state. New Mexico's project supported the collaborative partnership model developed from 1994-99 that demonstrated dynamic and aggressive action could bring about change in our communities. New Mexico utilized this opportunity to build upon its successes and to further refine models for replicating these collaborative activities within the state. The New Mexico project is based on the six pillars of character. The following activities were undertaken:

  • Advocate for character education in New Mexico communities by building on existing partnerships and expanding partnerships;

  • Build statewide capacity through leadership; and

  • Use the language and philosophy of "CHARACTER COUNTS!" as a vehicle to support schools and communities in character development and provide a focus for their activities.

Results of this project include: growth in the number of schools and communities addressing character, effective school/community partnerships, and the formation of a statewide organization committed to CHARACTER COUNTS! in New Mexico.
