Connect to the Library's catalogs
There are some non-automated material published earlier than 1968, which
may be found in the published National Union Catalog of Pre-1956 Imprints,
or the subsequent volumes of the National Union Catalog, or will need
to be searched manually at the Library of Congress. The online subscription
item WorldCat, which can be found under Electronic
Resouces, may also provide further bibliographic information.
Genealogical and Local History Collections
- Available in various reading rooms such as the Hispanic Reading Room,
the Main Reading Room, and especially
through the Local History and Genealogical Reading
Room. The latter reading room provides specialized reference assistance
in genealogical studies worldwide. Because of the extent of the collections,
and the complexity of genealogical research, one should check not only
with the catalog of the Library but
also with reference librarians who may suggest sources in other parts of
the Library. For example, if one were to search for the descendants of
the Aztec ruler Montezuma, an interesting source would be a 1596 document
from the Spanish Archivo General de Indias. This document, " Arbol genealógico
de la descendencia de Motezuma [sic]," is photograpically reproduced
and found in the collections of the Prints and Photographs Division. The
finding aid Hispanic
Local History and Genealogy in the United States provides an overview
of some of the materials found through this reading room.
- Search an automated
index to the major published work of Hispanic Genealogy and Heraldry. This
is an index to Spanish and Latin American surnames found in the work of
García Carraffa.
Law Collections
- Because of the legislative duties of the Library of Congress, textual
legal materials are not available in the Hispanic Reading Room. The text
of laws, decrees, ordinances, etc. are available to the reader in the Law
Library. The Law Library Reading Room offers
an extensive collection of Carribean and Luso-Hispanic material. Legal
materials for Hispanic subjects as reflected in United States legislation
is available through the THOMAS database. The historical or sociological
impact of a given law may be found through perusal of the general collections.
Additional bibliographic information on these aspects may be gleaned from
standard historical or sociological sources such as The Handbook of Latin American Studies.
Such material is available through the Hispanic Reading Room.
- Global Legal Information
Network. The Library of Congress' site for legal information. The Guide:
Nations of the World is an annotated file of hyperlinks to sources
that allow one to search the Internet for legal, including some political
and governmental, material for individual countries.

Manuscript Collections
Available in the Manuscript Reading Room
Many items within the Manuscript collections have Hispanic related materials.
For example, portions of The George Washington Papers at the Library
of Congress have been recently mounted online. One may search
this collection for the word 'Spain' and find at least 96 letters
in George Washington's Letterbooks. Click on the individual
citation to see a photographic reproduction of the selected letter. Many
of these letters have transcriptions available.

The National Union catalog of
Manuscript Collections. This is a Union Catalog (a listing of the
holdings of) manuscript collections in various libraries. Search the RLG Union
Catalog and search
the OCLC catalog for citations in both
the Library of Congress and in other libraries.
Map Collections
Available in the Geography and Map Reading Room
Map Collections 1544-1996 site.
Besides the rest of the United States, there are historical maps of the
Southwestern part of the United States available online on the Panoramic Maps 1847-1921 site.
Materials reproduced from archives in Spain. [Please
note that this is a large file, 106KB, or depending upon your printer,
about 39 pages of citations to maps in their collections.]
