The Library of Congress will implement the 2005 Update to the 2002 AACR2 on August 1, 2005. The 2005 AACR2 Update will be available in Cataloger's Desktop on that date.
The 2005 AACR2 Update contains the following changes:
- App. A.2A1: The capitalization rules for headings now permit corporate names with "unusual capitalization" to be established according to the capitalization practice of the body (e.g., "eBay"; "drkoop.com, Inc.").
- App. A.4A1: The capitalization rules for titles now provide for (a) titles beginning with a lower case letter followed by an upper case letter ("capitalize only the secondary element of the compound term immediately following the introductory letter"; e.g., "e-Commerce security"); (b) titles beginning with an Internet address ("do not capitalize the first element if it is not capitalized on the resource"; e.g., "www.advertising").
- App. A.30A: For a compound term appearing with a single letter or multiple letters capitalized, and the term is not covered by revised A.2A1 or revised A.4A1, the rule now permits the term to be capitalized as found on the resource (e.g., "iTV"; "pcAnywhere").
- App. A.40: The rules for German capitalization have been revised to reflect the changes in German orthography.
- App. D; 2.5C3: The Glossary definition for "coloured illustration" has been changed ("black, white, and shades of grey are not to be considered colours") and colored illustrations are noted in the physical description area only "if considered to be important."
- App. E.1A: The Turkish word "bir" has been removed from the AACR2 initial article list.
- 1.1C1, footnote 2; 3.0D; 3.3B7: Corrections have been made to these cartographic rules.
