MARC Proposal No. 2008-10

Proposal 2008-10: Definition of a subfield for Other standard number in field 534

1. BACKGROUND

As introduced in Proposal 2008-04 (Changes to nature of entire work and nature of content codes in field 008), many libraries in Finland are adopting the MARC 21 formats. This paper describes a change to the MARC 21 bibliographic format that Finnish libraries would like to be made to support their conversion activities.

2. DISCUSSION

Field 534 (Original version note) in the MARC 21 bibliographic format contains descriptive data for an original item when the main portion of the bibliographic record describes a reproduction of that item and the data differ. The resource being cataloged may either be a reproduction (e.g., scanned image, or PDF), or an edition that is similar enough that it could serve as a surrogate for the original (e.g., HTML). Subfields $x (International Standard Serial Number) and $z (International Standard Book Number) are defined in field 534 (Original version note). However, other standard numbers, such as the ISMN (International Standard Music Number) cannot be recorded in field 534.

It is currently possible to code other resource identifiers associated with the original version in MARC21-Fin field 534 (Original version note) subfield $x (Number). Therefore, the Finnish library community would like to continue to record other resource identifiers in field 534 (Original version note) when it converts to MARC 21. A new subfield may be defined to include other resource identifiers, besides the ISSN (coded in subfield $x) and ISBN (coded in subfield $z) in field 534 (Original version note) of the MARC 21 bibliographic format.

3. PROPOSED CHANGE

In field 534 (Original version note) of the MARC 21 bibliographic format:
