Iraqi Police Nab Insurgents; Soldiers Find Weapons

WASHINGTON, March 13, 2006 – Iraqi and multinational forces have captured more terrorism suspects and discovered more weapons caches in recent days, military officials in Iraq reported.

  • Iraqi police today captured 16 insurgents suspected of attacking coalition forces northwest of Kirkuk, about 150 miles north of Baghdad. After detaining the terror suspects, members of the Kirkuk police emergency special unit found improvised explosive device-making materials along with a cache of two artillery rounds. U.S. soldiers of 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division served as advisers during the mission.
  • In northeastern Baghdad, soldiers from the 2nd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, disarmed a car bomb in Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood yesterday.
Several actions occurred March 10:

  • Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, found a cache containing mortar and artillery rounds, detonation cord and primers.
  • Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, found mortar rounds and charges south of Sadir al Yusafiyah.
  • Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, found several electronic initiating devices used to detonate roadside bombs and 1,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
  • Iraqi soldiers detained eight insurgents March 10 after a civilian tipped off the local Joint Coordination Center of a suspicious group of vehicles beginning to form southwest of Dawr. As soldiers of 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division, moved in to investigate the vehicles, terrorists opened fire with small-arms weapons, but were driven back by the Iraqi soldiers. The soldiers captured eight insurgents, some with the help of U.S. soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
