American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2005 – The secretary of veterans affairs has urged employees of his department, veterans and their families to take part in the Sept. 11 "America Supports You Freedom Walk" that begins at the Pentagon, officials at that agency announced Aug. 19.

"This is everyone's chance to salute the valor of ordinary Americans during the 9/11 attack and the extraordinary sacrifices of our service personnel in the global war on terrorism," VA Secretary R. James Nicholson said.

The America Supports You Freedom Walk begins Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. in the Pentagon's south parking lot and ends at the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. The walk will include a free concert on mall by country music performer Clint Black.

Officials with the Defense Department's America Supports You program, which is sponsoring the Freedom Walk, hope to make it an annual event, with other communities holding their own Freedom Walks next year.

The America Supports You program seeks to highlight what communities, organizations and individuals throughout the United States are doing to support the troops.
