Vehicle Accident Claims Soldier; Crew Survives Helo Crash

One 1st Infantry Division soldier died and seven others were injured in a vehicle accident near Baqubah. Six of the injured soldiers were taken to a military treatment facility and were reported to be in stable condition. The seventh was treated and returned to duty.

Also on Sept. 8, the crew of a Multinational Force Iraq helicopter was evacuated when the aircraft crashed in Anbar province. All four personnel who were aboard are expected to fully recover, officials said.

Iraqi security forces and Multinational Force Iraq soldiers were kept busy Sept. 8 throughout northern Iraq.

Eight insurgents were detained, a roadside bombing was thwarted, and weapons were recovered.

Soldiers from 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, detained three people wanted for planning and conducting anti-Iraqi activities. The suspects are associated with the terrorist element that has repeatedly attacked multinational forces, Iraqi security forces and civilians during the past two weeks in Tal Afar, officials said. They were arrested while trying to gather intelligence near a base in Tal Afar.

Northwest of Mosul, Iraqi National Guardsmen conducted two cordon-and-search operations and detained three suspected anti-Iraqi personnel.

Iraqi police foiled a roadside bomb attack after they noticed a suspicious item lying near the road in the neighborhood of Al Mosul Al Jadidah. An Iraqi explosive ordnance disposal team destroyed the device, and no injuries were reported.

A concerned citizen came to soldiers of 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, in northern Mosul and turned in an SA-7 surface-to-air missile and launcher. A U.S. EOD team secured the missile for future destruction.

Iraqi National Guard and 1st Infantry Division soldiers detained two suspected anti-Iraqi force insurgents during a raid near Tikrit. The soldiers conducted the raid based on information provided by an Iraqi citizen.
