ANKARA, Turkey, Aug. 1, 2000 – Soldiers of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit of Fort Benning, Ga., won five individual and two team medals World Military Shooting Championships here July 17 to 26.
The championships, sponsored by the Conseil International du Sport Militaire, consisted of men's and women's rifle and pistol competitions. Hundreds of shooters from dozens of countries competed.
Capt. Glenn A. Dubis picked up his sixth CISM championship trophy, sweeping every rifle match. Dubis also won gold medals in 300-meter military rapid fire rifle and 300-meter standard rifle events. Dubis will be going to Sydney, Australia, in September for his fourth Olympics. He was the only 2000 U.S. Olympian at CISM.
"Captain Dubis has won the CISM rifle championship more times than everyone else in the world combined," said Maj. Robert E. Harbison, U.S. CISM team captain. "They call the championship trophy the 'Dubis Trophy' because his name is on it so many times."
Staff Sgt. Eric A. Uptagrafft took the silver medal in the standard rifle championship with Harbison missing bronze by one point. Sgt. Troy A. Bassham got the silver medal in the rapid fire championships with Maj. Stephen C. Goff missing bronz, also by a point.
The quintet of Dubis, Harbison, Uptagrafft, Bassham and Goff captured the gold medal in the standard rifle team championship and the silver medal in the rapid fire championship, only one point away from Norway, which got the gold.
The U.S. women's rifle team of 1st Lt. Kimberly N. Howe of AMU, Air Force 1st Lt. Deena Wigger and U.S. Military Academy Cadet Kimberly Pienkowski placed sixth out of 18 teams in the 50-meter sport rifle match and eighth in the prone rifle match.
USAMU's Staff Sgt. Carl W. Trompeter II tied for the win the 25-Meter Military Rapid Fire Pistol Match and ended up with the Silver Medal after the shoot-off.
The USA men's pistol team of Trompeter and Maj. Steven M. King of AMU, Air Force Capt. David Vondrak and Marine Staff Sgts. Brian Poe and Dexter Conrad finished 10th out of 28 teams in the military rapid fire match and 15th out of 31 teams in the center fire match.
The U.S. women's pistol team of Army Reservist Cpl. Sandra Utasy and AMU's Capt. Rhonda L. Bright and Spc. Renee D. Ayala placed fifth out of 20 teams in the sport pistol championships and sixth in the military rapid fire pistol competition.
