Survey description
The National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery (NSAS) was first conducted in 1994 to gather and
disseminate nationwide data about ambulatory surgery performed in hospitals and
freestanding ambulatory surgery centers. Survey data was abstracted from sampled medical
records of ambulatory surgery visits in hospitals and freestanding ambulatory surgery
centers.
Data file description
Medical record data include age, sex, race, expected source
of payment, discharge status, visit date, type of anesthesia, and anesthesia
administrator. Facility characteristics include region of the country and whether the
facility is a hospital or a free standing ambulatory surgery center. Diagnostic data
include up to seven diagnoses per patient. Data on procedures include a maximum of six
procedures per patient. Diagnoses and procedures were coded according to the
International
Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification ICD-9-CM.
The tapes contain no confidential data.
