WASHINGTON, May 3, 2002 – Defense Department officials today presented The Commander in Chief's Award for Installation Excellence to representatives of five military posts from around the globe.
Each service and the Defense Logistics Agency choose their own recipients for the annual award. The organizations are tasked to choose the installation whose leadership has done the best job to sustain the mission, increase productivity of the work force and enhance quality of life. This year's service winners are: 417th Base Support Battalion, Kitzingen, Germany, Army; Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif.; the Crane Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Ind.; and Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal, Air Force. The Defense Logistics Agency's winner is the Defense Supply Center Richmond, Va. Winners received a trophy for their installations, as well as an "Excellent Installation" flag and a letter from President Bush. "Each winning installation succeeded in providing excellent working, housing and recreational conditions," DoD officials said. "Excellent installations enable better mission performance and enhance the quality of life for military men and women and their families." The Commander in Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence began in 1985 under President Reagan. At that time, he challenged the services to search for installations where DoD personnel did the best job with available resources. "I am confident that this search for excellence and innovations will yield many new and better ways of accomplishing our mission and at the same time honor those whose dedication has produced the best defense organization in the world," Reagan said in kicking off the program.
