1997 Armed Forces Boxing Tournament Results

WASHINGTON, Feb. 20, 1997 – Below are results of the 1997 armed forces boxing championships, held Feb. 9-14 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Army captured the team title, winning seven gold medals and four silver medals.

Marine Corps finished second with four titles and five second-place finishes. Navy grabbed one title and two second place medals in taking third, followed by Air Force, which was shut out of the championships.

Flyweight (112) -- Pfc. John Medina (A, Fort Huachuca) def. Cpl. Adam Burton (MC, Camp Lejeune), points.

Bantamweight (119) Sgt. George Cofield (A, Hanau, Germany), uncontested.

Featherweight (125) -- Cpl. Matthew Plake (MC, Camp Lejeune) def. Spc. Aljil Booker (A, Camp Red Cloud, Korea), points.

Lightweight (132) -- Petty Officer 3rd Class Benjamin Bundy (N, Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, Va.) def. Pfc. Francisco Santiago(A, Camp Humphreys, Korea), points.

Light Welterweight (139) -- Sgt. Reginald Smith (A, Fort Hood, Texas) def. Cpl. Larry Barnes (MC, Camp Pendleton, Calif.), points.

Welterweight (147) -- Cpl. Steven Stokes (MC, Twentynine Palms, Calif.) def. Pfc. Mustafa Fahim (A, Fort Huachuca), points.

Light Middleweight (156) -- Lance Cpl. Henry Markin (MC, Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan) def. Spc. Carl Miller (A, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii), points.

Middleweight (165) -- Sgt. Julius Fogel (A, Fort Huachuca) def. Lance Cpl. Edgar King (MC, Camp Lejeune), points.

Light Heavyweight (178) -- Spc. Olanda Anderson (A, Fort Huachuca) def. Petty Officer 3rd Class Israel Spencer (N, USS Pensacola), points.

Heavyweight (201) -- . Lance Cpl. Jason Brown (MC, Camp Lejeune) def. Petty Officer 3rd Class Kendri Smith (N, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower), medical disqualification.
